Day Trip to Visit the Bernheim Forest Giants

Little Nis at Bernheim

Last weekend we made the short drive up to Bernheim Arboretum and Research Forest in Shepherdsville to finally see the forest giants. It was a great family day trip that we all enjoyed, from toddler to adult!

Where Did the Forest Giants Come From?

The three giants were placed in Bernheim Arboretum on the occasion of the arboretum’s 90th anniversary. They were created by Thomas Dambo, a Danish artist. They first were placed in the forest in March of 2019 and were originally projected to be there for at least 3 years. So, see them while you have the chance!

How Many Giants are at Bernheim?

The Giant family includes 3 total members – Mama Loumari and her two kids Nis and Elina.

The Bernheim Forest Giants are a part of a Fairy Tale which the artist wrote. They are part of a larger story which connects them to other Giant Trolls that he has created. The story (which you can find here) mentions Isak Heartstone, the father of the Bernheim family, who lives in Breckenridge, Colorado!

Thomas Dambo’s website has an interactive Giant Map where you can see the locations of all of his other giant sculptures.

Visiting the 3 Bernheim Forest Giants

The first giant we saw was Little Nis. He is staring at his reflection in the pond, not far from the parking lot.

From there, it’s an easy walk up through a little field and across a road where you can find Mama Loumari and Little Elina in close proximity. Along the way, you can check out all sorts of different trees and plants, many with placards that tell what they are.

Mama Loumari has a baby in her tummy, and is relaxing her back next to a tree.

Right next to Mama Loumari you will find a nature playground which my kids (ages 6 and almost 2) really enjoyed. It’s a nice place to let the kids play and burn some energy, especially since climbing on Mama Loumari is not allowed.

Little Elina is the farthest from the parking lot. She is sitting next to a feather pattern made out of rocks.

How Much Does it Cost to Visit the Bernheim Forest Giants?

Entering the arboretum and visiting the giants is technically free, although they do suggest a $10 donation at the gate.

Where Are the Bernheim Forest Giants?

You can find the giants at the Bernheim Arboretum and Research Forest in Shepherdsville, Kentucky. The full address is:

2075 Clermont Road
Shepherdsville, KY 40110

Once you enter Bernheim, there is very clear signage that will lead you to the parking lot nearest the giants. If it’s a busy day, you may have to park in an overflow lot, however none of them are very far from the giants.
